Holy crap. I listened to “Thirteen Steps” a couple times. Then I had an urge to listen to their first one, “Mer de Noms”.

What a sad album. I don’t mean it was bad รขโ‚ฌโ€ “Mer de Noms” is a very good album. I just mean it’s sad. Yeah, it’s angry at parts. But “3 Libras” and “Sleeping Beauty”… Jeez. I remember cranking those songs back in the day at The Club. On the occasions where I was depressed as hell about this or that girl, that is.

Very good songs. Very sad too.

I think “3 Libras” is a little unfair, though. Just speaking from my experience:

Threw you the obvious
and you flew with it on your back
a name
in your recollection
down among a million same.

… just sounds a little harsh to me. But still sad. Who hasn’t been there?

I’ve been writing an awful lot about music lately. I keep writing about this song or this lyric. Huh.

I’m in the process of transfering my music to my computer at work. Don’t have headphones yet, so it’s not much use. But a lot of the people there use iTunes and share their music. That opens up something I hadn’t anticipated: playlist anxiety. I’m fucking self-conscious about my music. How lame is that?

Ok, ok. I have some John Mayer and HIM. That probably explains it.

Shut up. I like John Mayer.

    shutting up.

Heh heh. I actually had a conversation with my brother-in-law (a pretty good musician) about that. Yeah, people think Mayer is cheesy or whatever, but he’s actually a very good musician. And he managed to attract some pretty impressive people to do the John Mayer Trio with him.

John is a very accomplished musician — I’ve seen him play (and keep up) with some heavy jazz legends (Metheny, Scofield) and he’s also done some guest tracks on Scofield’s last record and with Herbie Hancock as well.

He does have some cheesy-pop stuff, but you’ll notice he’ll even slip in some blues or jazz in his phrasing or chord voicings.

    No argument from me.

On another note, I just downloaded my first podcast. Wrestle the Shark episode #6, and will be listening to it once I wrangle some headphones from someone. Be happy, you and Jason have popped my podcast cherry.

Oh dear god — ours will be the first? Oh my. Don’t judge podcasts by us. ๐Ÿ˜›
